Alcohol consumption declining
According to figures from the British Beer and Pub Association, in 2009, alcohol consumption saw the steepest year-on-year decline since 1948.

Statistics showed a 6% decline in 2009, the fourth annual decline in five years.

UK drinkers are now consuming 13% less alcohol than they were in 2004, say the association, which is below the EU average.

The study used data from HM Revenue and Customs about the amount of alcohol sold and imported in the UK.

The decline could be due to the recession's effect on spending, but could also be a sign that hard-hitting messages about responsible drinking have started to have an effect.

The BBPA Statistical Handbook 2010 shows other statistics such as beer still being the most popular drink sold, accounting for 60% of all alcohol sales, with wine in second place at 17%.
