Sales figures for the week ending Saturday November 19 at leading department store John Lewis show that Christmas shopping momentum is building.
The nation’s favourite department store achieved a sterling total of £85.2m last week. While this was a 3.2% drop on the same week last year it does show an 11.6% increase on last week.
Beds and bedding, as well as linens and cushions were in high demand as shoppers ready themselves for visitors at Christmas. Figures also show that Christmas gifting is forefront of mind as sales of toys, gift food, Advent calendars and Christmas decorations saw significant uplifts. Fragrance and branded handbags sales were also strong as shoppers treat themselves as well as those they love.
Kindle Readers and iPads continued to perform well last week with headphones a key performer as customers took advantage of John Lewis Partners' knowledgeable sales advice and excellent after-sales service.
Lesley Ballantyne, Director, Operational Development for John Lewis, said: “We are pleased to see a strong uplift in week-on-week sales albeit at a slower rate than last year. Our shoppers have begun the countdown to Christmas demonstrated by coming out in force to all our branches this weekend to celebrate all things festive.
“Momentum would no doubt have been greater if it wasn’t for the unseasonably mild weather but we have put in a strong performance nonetheless as shoppers come to John Lewis for its unparalleled position on price and quality, underscored by our commitment to being Never Knowingly Undersold. They can be confident that they get the best price, quality and service from us in shops and online.
“This promise means that we will not deviate from that relationship no matter how challenging the environment is.”
"Johnlewis.com sales grew steadily last week, posting an 18% year-on-year growth. With over 200,000 products now available on our website, the online operation is well placed to realise its full potential as we approach the peak online trading week in early December."
The news comes as more than two million people viewed the latest John Lewis Christmas advert on Youtube, with many shoppers hailing it the best ever. |
